Old Masters

<Albrecht Durer>

The term "Old Masters"

An inexact but still helpful term, “Old Masters” is a versatile label that refers to European artists and artworks stretching from the Renaissance until the beginning of the 19th century. The term can be applied to the artist or the piece of art itself depending on the context. The artists considered Old Masters are normally painters and the use of the term implies high quality. The Oxford Dictionary of Art notes that auction houses use the term as a chronological divider and not as a mark of quality, allowing for the sale of masterpieces as well as less distinguished copies.
